Epicentre - Chronology

At the beginning of the 1980’s, a few doctors from MSF went to the USA to train in epidemiology. The idea of creating an organization providing scientific support for MSF was born at that time. In 1986, Epicentre “a satellite association of MSF-France” was created in Paris.


1986 : Creation of Epicentre as a "satellite" association of MSF

1990 : Study on pellagra, recognition by the United Nations and modification of the composition of food rations distributed to Mozambican refugees in Malawi

1991 : Survey on mortality rates in Iraqi Kurdistan

1994 : Beginning of work on oily chloramphenicol in single dose as a treatment for meningitis in epidemic situation

Beginning of studies on rapid diagnosis tests

Survey on mortality rates of Rwandan refugees in Goma (DRC) in extremely difficult conditions (large population, major insecurity)

1996 : Epicentre becomes a WHO collaborating centre for epidemiology and response to emerging diseases

1997 : Study on the efficacy of new cholera vaccines in Uganda

1998 : Opening of the permanent clinical research base in Mbarara, Uganda

2000 : Creation of the monitoring software “Follow Up Care HIV Aids” (FUCHIA) to follow up patients in Aids treatment programs

2001 : Assessment of rapid diagnosis tests for malaria

2003 : Studies in Niger on the efficacy of strategies in outpatient malnutrition treatment

2004 : Investigations in Darfour to bear witness to violence and excessive mortality rate within the population

2006 : Trial on mass vaccination relevance in measles epidemic

2008 : Conclusive results of the NECT clinical trial that simplifies the sleeping sickness treatment

          Decentralization of training sessions in the field

2009 : Opening of a second research base in Maradi, Niger

2010 : Epidemiologic support for MSF’s relief interventions after Haiti earthquake and cholera outbreak
